BALLADS OF DISPLACEMENT

"The word remember evokes a coming together of severed parts, fragments becoming a whole"

- bell hooks

In every place, person, or phrase we leave behind lingers a fragment of identity and heritage, crystalized in time, ever-changing yet immobile. Too often, we part with these disjointed aspects of ourselves without mourning what once was or cherishing what has been.

Ballads of Displacement
calls for a space to explore and reconnect with our collective challenges with displacement scattered across a physical, emotional, spiritual, or cultural landscape. Displacement acts as both a binding force and an isolating agent, distorting and rearranging our sense of self. We are left with snapshots of our fading memory and mnemonic imagination, tasked with remembering and connecting our previous selves to our present interpretation of our identity.

The participating artists and their works speak of the fragmentation of belonging, and a blurred contrast between variations of the self. They explore the transformative impact of uprooting and working through trauma and memory. Each piece becomes a ballad of survival and strength, a journey across time, generation, and geography. Through this exhibition, we can engage with artworks inspiring resilience and strength, allowing us to rethink how displacement affects our perception of self, community, and home.

Curatorial statement written by Emitees Tajdari.

ORGANIC FORMS

Where does the beauty of an object lie? Is it the matter, the form, or somewhere beyond the tangible realm? How does nature—through its textures, patterns, and transformations—affect our experience with the piece?

Organic Forms is a call to introspection, urging the viewer to engage with the works' materiality while absorbing their emotional resonance. Grounded in the aesthetics of form and beauty, each piece provokes a visceral, somatic response.

CAN’T FIND THE SUN

Can’t Find the Sun brings together twelve works from 8 artists to speculate possible lines of inquiry into the rift of vision and dislocation. In the exhibition’s context, the works will expand a constellation of perspectives pertaining to notions of extremity, dream, extravaganza, escape, and other manifestations of natural excess in vision and its slums.

OUR A(R)MOUR

This exhibition emphasizes two major points:
(1) One can only meet another as much as they meet themselves and
(2) the integration of the shadow ourselves into who we are is a deeply painful experience that is an individual journey but one that we must do together. The pain to be vulnerable with others is just the pain to be vulnerable with the self, however it is in being courageous that we find ourselves unconditionally and wholly loved by others and ourselves, as well as freedom and belonging.

Isabel Yong is a 22 year old student currently residing in Montreal, Canada. As a child of constant change, her exploration of her cultural/ethnic ambiguity and queerness has empowered her to connect with the people around her in a dynamic and multifaceted way, and find community in shared passion and kindness. Themes of impermanence, identity, and belonging, have consistently underlined her creative work, be it her oil paintings or her clinical work.

POST MORTEM: ART MATTERS FESTIVAL

A showmakers’ show, Post Mortem gives light and space to the artistic endeavours of the Art Matters 2025 staff. Spanning the mediums of scenography, sculpture, painting, drawing, and performance, this exhibition houses a sampling of the creative diversity each member brought to the team. Our broad range of artistic backgrounds and stylistic perspectives is part of what made this year such a success.

Working on the festival means pouring a lot of time, energy, and care into the work of our peers. This exhibition is our way of highlighting the simultaneous labour that goes into the dual role of artist/cultural worker. A celebration of our artistic practices and the success of our collaboration as a team, Post Mortem marks the end of a truly special year.

We can’t wait to see you all at the last Art Matters vernissage of the year!

A huge thank you to FASA and the VAV for making this show possible!
