CYCLES OF EXISTENCE

Much of life, whether what we see around us or experience first hand, comes in the form of cycles. Growth, the seasons, emotions, our bodies, strife in the world, breathing, everything we know seems to exist in a cycle. Cycles of Existence explores exactly this - the cyclical nature of life, either in the subconscious, the physical, or the abstract. Here you will find patterns, nature, time, histories, routines, and even mystery. The VAV Gallery invites you to wander through the space, inquisitive about each piece and its expression of the artist. Together we can complete our own cycle - from art, to artist, to curator, to you.

OPEN WOMB

We are all created and born from a womb, we all exist because of wombs. As traumatizing as it is to be born, it is a fitting introduction to how traumatizing it is to live. Throughout life we are all treated differently depending on what we look like and where we come from (among many other things). Before a fetus can even open their eyes, they are given a gender and treated as such. Immediately placed upon us are labels and identifiers that dictate how the world views and treats us. We are constantly experiencing what it means to exist within the confines of our body. Open Womb is about the open wounds we absorb throughout life as it has to do with our socialization through gender, sexuality, and/or femininity.

KAKTOS

Kaktos is the latin word for Cactus. Because cacti can survive in harsh conditions, they ve become a symbol of warmth and unconditional, enduring love. They have also come to symbolize strength and protection. This exhibition was curated for Black History Month, to highlight and uplift Black artists at Concordia.
