A PRACTICE IN HEALING

Through the body of works presented exhibition, A Practice in Healing explores a strong sense of self-renewal emerging in relation to, the retention or rejection recollection. Intertwining themes such as memory, trauma, displacement, secrecy and time-passing, these works attempt to acknowledge their own realities.

In a myriad of mediums such as drawing, photography and filmmaking, these seven artworks act as different vectors into their remembrance. Nesreen Galal uses Distorted Memories to explore, perhaps tame fading memory of through series of cyanotypes, whereas Edson Niebla Rogil, in volcán, seeks to share narrative of Latinx femicide in order to question the politics of personal positionality.

There is a rhythmic collectivity created throughout the exhibition. Jennifer Lee translates her experience with mental illness through Anorexia Nervosa: A Medical Dossier which composed of colorful pages documenting her experience with mental illness. In How to Draw a (Complete) Circle, Spencer Magnan draws circles on over 200 sheets of paper symbolising personal struggles and achievements. Through patterns of repetition, the seven artists in A Practice in Healing are delving into the exploration of temporalities, using liberation to revisit their possibilities of existing.

ABSENCE OF ANOTHER

The six works in Absence of Another highlight the emptiness felt in familiar spaces, bringing together seven artists contemplating how vacancy shapes their personal, social and physical surroundings.

Anissa Boukili El Hassani and Camille Emmanuelle Legault's photo installations are ample compliments to each other. From the perspective of a visitor or houseguest, Boukili El Hassani's Guillaume journeys through a sombre, nostalgic home, documenting the tragic absence of her close triend's brother, and his grandmother and uncle. Similarly, Legault's le vide effleure seulement les gens qui s'y attarde trop longtemps (the void only touches people who linger there too long), stages an absence to reflect on the healing process of dealing with loss.

Michelle Caron-Pawlowsky, Sonia Reboul and Christina Duquesne explore healing in relation to one's environment in their works With Pulp and Ivresse (Drunkeness). In With Pulp, Caron-Pawlowsky poetically addresses the dualities of healing informed by Queer Ecology. Surrendering to the act of healing and finding an environment within oneself, Caron-Pawlowsky's ghostly imagery references being at peace with the past in order to tread gently into the future. Sonia Reboul and Christina Duquesne use music with abstract visuals in Ivresse (Drunkeness) to grasp at the environmental feelings of healing from trauma. Collaborating together, the work becomes entangled with universal aspects of experiencing trauma while the absence of a full figure speaks to a solitary journey, reminiscent of vacancy.

Magali Bélair-Boileau's fragmented self-portrait invites viewers to recreate an image of the artist, but viewed online, this interaction is limited, if not entirely impossible. Online, this intimate, three-dimensional painting returns to its two-dimensional form, rendering Bélair-Boileau's entirely up to the way she presents it to the viewer. In Absence of Another, Bélair-Boileau Des petits bouts de moi (Little pieces of me) inadvertently reasserts control over her identity, reclaiming her fragility and vulnerability that was otherwise left to the viewer to [re]construct.

To finish off, we return home. Catherine Leblanc shares her intimate and vibrant -past-home that she used to live in Le 5950, Appartement #4. Numerous gazes congregate in this homespace which feels warm and pleasantly filled with noise.

By breaking from the square, Leblanc engages us in the happy disheveledness of our memories of having friends over in our houses.
