#73 The Grocery List

Telescope room, barred mirrors, pearl tattoo, dignitary haircut. Corners become a scope of which to examine: coalmine, deer-hoof, dust-mite, grocery bag, spare hair, jasmine. List of things to buy includes dish-soap, toys, Lego, action figurines, barbies (kept inside the plastic), crack-rocks, orange juice, methadone, cell-phone, houses, comfort, rugs of Persian silk, etcetera. Six bottles of beer, bare feet. Residue of presence. Something like a haunt. Gotta cross a couple things off the grocery list, you know? Make a sweep. I keep writing that down and forgetting everything.

BRIDGES

This exhibition features recent works by Christina Kenins and Isabelle Landry, dealing with issues of social heritage, ancestry, and cultural distance and separation. This exhibition unites Kenins’ painting and drawing practices, both of which deal with her Latvian heritage. In her paintings, Kenins portrays a mythologized Latvian landscape based on her relationship with the country which she has never visited. In her drawings, Kenins draws on the personal connection she has had with her ancestry through Latvian textile patterns and designs. The labour-intensive works act as a means of reconciling the artist with Latvian tradition, the textiles upon which the drawings are based also being extremely detail-oriented in nature.
